Event: Dec. 13-17 is Air Quality Data Week at Public Lab!

Join us for a series of events the week of December 13, when we'll be wrapping up our latest research area review and talking about all things air quality data. Events will include:

  • a presentation on getting started with visualizing and communicating air quality data, followed by a community discussion,
  • a guest speaker session featuring community scientists working with air quality data,
  • a live build of Public Lab's Simple Air Sensor

📊 Presentation on communicating air quality data + discussion

When: Tuesday, December 14, 1pm PT / 3pm CT / 4pm ET / 9pm UTC / other time zones. This event will run for approximately 2 hours with a 15 min break in the middle.

Where: Join Air Quality Data presentation + discussion Zoom meeting

What:

  • 0 - 45 mins: We'll present resources on getting started with visualizing and communicating air quality data
  • 45 - 60 mins: Break
  • 60 - 120 mins: Open and facilitated community discussion time with @fongvania. Join us to share your ideas and questions, exchange tips and stories, and meet others who are interested in air quality data.

📣 Community scientists working with air quality data: guest speaker session

When: Thursday, December 16, 12pm PT / 2pm CT / 3pm ET / 8pm UTC / other time zones. This event will run for approximately 1 hour.

Where: Air Quality Community Projects: Guest Speaker Session

What: The following speakers will share their information, updates, and lessons learned from their air quality monitoring projects.

  • Mary Jo Burke, resident of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in New York City who, along with other residents, is concerned about the air quality in the neighborhood, especially as it relates to the destruction of the East River Park. Her presentation will be about LES Breathe, a volunteer run group that was created within the organization East River Park Action with public health, transparency and awareness as goals, that developed a citizen science project to monitor air quality in the neighborhood.
  • Christian Torres, Special Projects Manager overseeing the Identifying Violations Affecting Neighborhoods (IVAN) network, air monitoring efforts, citizen science projects, and research collaborations for Comite Civico del Valle. Christian also coordinates policy advocacy with their team & external partners across California.

⚙️ Live build and demonstration of Public Lab's Simple Air Sensor

When: Friday, December 17, 10am PT / 12pm CT / 1pm ET / 6pm UTC / other time zones. This event will run for approximately 1 hour.

Where: Join live build + demo Zoom meeting

What: ​​We'll build a particle-detecting air sensor made from a handful of parts, see how the sensor works, and then examine how to visualize data from the sensor. With @fongvania and @bhamster.

Who are these events for?

Anyone who's interested in communicating environmental data. We're focusing on air quality data but a lot of what we'll be talking about applies to any kind of environmental data. People who are looking for resources and a supportive community might find this call especially helpful.
