I am in need of Maps of the mining sites within Main...
Public Lab is an open community which collaboratively develops accessible, open source, Do-It-Yourself technologies for investigating local environmental health and justice issues.
I am in need of Maps of the mining sites within Maine. I have looked over the internet and haven't found anything - does anyone have a digital map, or know a source online where I can find some?
@eymund , with great respect for your forensic geography skills, might we ask if you could point us in the right direction to find a source for spatial data regarding mining operations in Maine?
@seankmcginnis , with your extensive work in global humanitarian mapping missions and with ESRI, could you advise us where to find a datasource for locations of mining operations in Maine?
Hey @liz - from some initial research I found this application from the USGS that has current and historic quarry and mine locations and reports. I will crack the application open a little more tomorrow morning to see if there is an accessible REST end point to access the data to be used outside of the USGS application. Other than location, are there specific elements or attribution that is desired to support the analysis? Time period?
If the mines of interest are represented in the application, here is a link to the data from USGS’ Mineral Resource Data System.
Here is a link to an application and underlying data managed by the Maine Geological Survey on historic mineral resource that may have some data that may help.
For the more detailed local Maine mining history I would look at historical rail maps available from USGS and the Library of Congress, focusing on the rail spurs in more remote areas
These historical maps will give you the forensic geography "key words" needed to dig up more specialized local histories such as for the Katahdin Iron Works
