For the LEGO spectrometer kit is there an adapter needed to connect the camera to the Raspberry Pi? The ribbon coming from the camera is too wide to fit in R-Pi and the cable that comes with the R-Pi which seems like it would do the job is 40mm so no way it's going to work.

Hi - Check you have a camera/Pi combination which is compatible - ie the camera for Pi3 and a Pi3 - I don't think they work across different versions. There is a'tutorial' at https://thepihut.com/blogs/raspberry-pi-tutorials/16021420-how-to-install-use-the-raspberry-pi-camera which might help A
