Some farmers in Vermont try to burn hayfields in the spring to remove dead grass, kill weed seeds, blacken the soil so it warms faster, and release nutrients. It is done after the perennial grasses are green and growing, so it looks like a green field is burning.


Notes

This field was burned on April 18, two days before these photos were captured. I should return before they make the first cutting in June to see if the burned areas look more productive. More about this KAP flight here: http://fastie.net/?p=1414
