Our question: are levels of gaseous airborne pollutants stronger near a known polluter?

As part of Public Lab's Community Fellowship Grant, our community 501c3, VVAMP, is investigating landfill gases in the ambient air. Landfill gasses are a result of decomposition and have a profile high in hydrocarbons. We use instruments that measure:

  • VOCs in ppb
  • SO2 in ppm
  • CH4 %LEL
  • O2 vol%
  • H2S in ppm
  • CO in ppm
  • SO2 in ppm
  • Isobutylene in ppm
  • NH3 in ppm

Although we have multiple instruments for testing, gas testing equipment requirements make it difficult to test multiple locations -- or to test on the fly. Our instruments need to be calibrated or bump tested before each day's use, so there is a bit of planning before an air test can be performed. It takes approximately 30 minutes to prepare the instruments before they are ready to go into the field each day.

While a temperature map with kriging was an original goal, we have since discovered that we do not have the resources in time, equipment, or manpower to test frequently enough to generate that kind of work product. Kriging is a mathematical formula that extrapolates the in-between geospatial data based on previously known data points. To get enough data points to perform a kriging exercise, we would need approximately 20 volunteers spread evenly to record levels for a minimum of one hour. The results would have to be averaged/analyzed and plotted geospatially. In addition, that test would need to be repeated multiple days and throughout differing seasons to get a reliable picture of the quality of the ambient air.

Instead of using kriging, we are using transects. Our transects are imaginary lines that are drawn from the pollution source in a roughly straight line. We test at points along the transects and measure the levels of air pollution on those points. A positive correlation will show higher pollution levels closer to the landfill and decrease farther along the transect.image description

Starting with a list of what we know helped us proceed to site selection.

What we know:

  • The characteristics of the odor are consistent with landfill gases -- and not petrochemicals or farming operations.
  • Odors predict positive gas monitoring readings. If there is no odor, the readings for air pollutants are likely to be null.
  • Odors are most likely to occur between 6:30-10:30 AM, with the peak hour occurring at 7:45-8:45 AM.
  • Preliminary tests have shown that there is a correlation between proximity of the landfill and elevated ambient gas pollution levels.

There are numerous microclimates in the community of Val Verde. Due to the presence of hills, airborne pollutants can get trapped/stagnate in areas, as well as travel quickly through canyons. We narrowed down the potential testing sites based on community input, accessibility, weather station data, and location. In the end, we selected locations in which several different arrays originating from the landfill could be plotted. These are the locations where we are measuring air pollutants daily.

Final note: One of the main benefits of using gas monitors daily is that they act as screening devices to determine if an air-grab sample is warranted. Air-grab samples are very accurate and are analyzed in a laboratory using a chromatograph. The tests are costly, so having a screening system in place is helpful and stretches our limited budget. We are using Public Lab's Bucket Monitor for air grab sampling; please follow our progress in the upcoming months to see our resulting data.

Certified lab testing by gc or gc/ms gets costly quickly. Are there any other less expensive screening tests that could be substituted for the initial testing phases?

This has been our issue for years, as well. In the past, we rented Summa canisters and would open them, only to get low to null readings and the labs were very expensive. We are fortunate to have gas monitors to inform us when a bucket grab sample is worthwhile. We are trying to figure out what is in the air when there is an odor. Now I understand that without a strong odor present, the air grab sample is probably not worthwhile.

The bucket tool from PL has been a great way to reduce our operating costs. We no longer rent Summas and are able to keep the buckets on hand in case we need to grab a sample.

In any case, I can commisserate. What are you monitoring?
