Windmeter options for iPhone - Shaka and Wind Meter

by patcoyle | August 18, 2013 05:01 18 Aug 05:01 | #9032 | #9032

Windmeters can be helpful in refining our intuition when considering flying kites, balloons or UAVs.

I recently got the Shaka hardware/app combo (~$70) and have had the Wind Meter app ($0.99) for the iPhone for a while. Shaka also captures temperature and wind direction and records the location in a history list.

While, I've not compared them head-to-head, I wanted to invite discussion on other options and how people are using windspeed indicators.

How does a 99 cent app know the wind speed? Do you have to point the camera at a flag? Dangle the phone on a string? Or does it listen until it hears something like "We got cows."?

Chris, the app appears upside down on the phone. You turn the so the app screen appears upright which orients the microphone and speaker end into the wind. It translates wind on either the mic or speaker into a value. Gets good reviews.
