A big question we started to grapple with at the Appalachian Barnraising was what to do to make progress on your environmental concern when other people in your community (especially family members or friends) depend on paychecks from that industry. Where do you start, and how do you move forward? Have you had experience with this situation? What did you do?

it depends on the degree of retaliation a company is willing to pursue. it's easiest to fire the family member of someone who makes a complaint, it's hardest, i think, to mess with landowner royalties, assuming you've signed a decent contract.

@eustatic, That's a good point. Does GRN work with any folks who are employed by one of the oil companies?
