Hi, guys. I am working on a project to study plant roots and hypocotyl. And i need take pictures for them in dark room. I do not want use lights that plants can use, like visible lights. I checked some articles and found that near infrared light might useful for me. Currently, i have a pi camera V2. Is it possible for me to buy near infrared light resource and also change my pi camera to capture near infrared light? Great thanks for your help.
If you are taking a still photo every hour or so, you might be able to take a flash photo. A split second flash of visible light might not interfere with the growth process you are studying.
If you must use non-visible light, the Pi NoIR camera has no IR cut filter and is sensitive to near IR light (but not very sensitive). You would then illuminate your roots with a near infrared light source. There are NIR LEDs which seem to emit no visible light. They might not be very bright but you can use a lot of them and maybe a long exposure. If you use an infrared filter over the lens, only infrared light can reach the sensor (but this is not needed if the scene is illuminated with only NIR light).

Hi, -One option would be to use near infrared LED strip lights similar to what was done here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6Vz6sSnXhY&feature=youtu.be. The Raspberry Pi can also control strip light timing(with an op amp or relay). - Most NIR LED strips come in around 830-850 nm. They may have a slight red tail edge that is visible(if your eye is dark adapted). You can purchase 910nm options which have no visible emissions but this is also getting near the edge of pi camera sensitivity. So 910nm images will work, just more grainy pictures than 850nm.
