Community science projects begin when frontline leaders facing environmental injustice set goals. Projects follow a non-linear trajectory that may include organizing, mobilization, empirical documentation, and [advocacy](/sandbox-advocacy) based on the results.

### Basic types of projects

There are a few main types of projects that collect environmental evidence to document reality and work towards locally held goals: 

* Establishment of a baseline → change detection
* Environmental Surveillance (Internet of Things, Open Data, Trend Spotting)
* Watchdogging, Hotspotting, bounty hunting, environmental self-defense
* Study Design with a disprovable hypothesis
