With public health, transparency and awareness the goal, LES Breathe is a community committee formed by members of East River Park Action to address the health impacts of the $1.4 billion East Side Coastal Resilience project (ESCR) in Lower Manhattan’s East River Park.

Impacting 110,000 Lower East Side residents, including 28,000 NYCHA residents during its multi-year construction, the current plan for ESCR will raze the entire 46 acre park and all of its trees and greenery, then bring in a million tons of fill and a seawall for a storm surge barrier. There will be a new raised park alongside the FDR Drive. How will construction impact public health? LES Breathe has these initial goals:

Our goal is to have open air quality data be readily available to everyone and to help local residents take action to protect themselves from poor indoor and outdoor air quality.
