In the United States, why do these matter in community environmental monitoring efforts? What do communities need to know about statute of limitations?

The statute determines for how long after suffering harm, a party may pursue legal action and be entitled to damages. Communities need to know the statute because delaying legal action can mean there is no longer a case to answer.

A statute of limitations is a law that sets the maximum amount of time that parties involved in a dispute have to initiate legal proceedings from the date of an alleged offense, whether civil or criminal.
